Reintroducing the Olfactory Contractor (Our First Newsletter)

I am excited to officially (re)introduce The Olfactory Contractor—a consulting practice and educational platform dedicated to helping museums, cultural institutions, and educators use scent as a meaningful tool for interpretation and storytelling.

At its core, The Olfactory Contractor exists to support institutions interested in olfactory storytelling: the thoughtful integration of smell into exhibitions, public programs, guided tours, and educational contexts. My work sits at the intersection of research, practice, and experimentation—drawing on years of collaboration with museums, curators, artists, and perfumers in both the United States and Europe.

Through consulting, I work with institutions to identify relevant olfactory narratives, design interpretive strategies, and develop practical, accessible ways to present scent in public spaces. This includes advising on historically informed scents, olfactory storytelling frameworks, visitor experience, accessibility, and ethical considerations—always with the goal of making scent an intentional interpretive medium rather than a novelty. I can also facilitate hands-on, nose-on workshops, or design and guest-curate olfactory experiences for your institution.

This newsletter marks a new chapter for The Olfactory Contractor. Here, I will be sharing updates on:

  • Announcements for the courses and lectures I am teaching;
  • A convenient way to access all of my most recent blog posts that outline practical insights, tools, and case studies geared towards museum professionals and educators;
  • Upcoming exhibitions, events, and collaborations;
  • New writing and research on olfactory museology.

This first newsletter is being shared across all of my platforms, but soon updates will be sent exclusively to subscribers. If you want to stay in the loop about upcoming courses, events, and projects, please subscribe to the newsletter here!

Interested in working with scent in your institution?
Get in touch to discuss how olfactory storytelling can support your next exhibition or program. I look forward to collaborating—and to continuing the conversation around multisensory cultural heritage.

Nosetalgia

Smell places you inside a memory. A single whiff and suddenly you are somewhere else entirely: a place, a person, a moment that you may have forgotten. This is what makes olfaction unlike any other sense. And it is why the concept of “nosetalgia” is so...
