New on the Blog

Nosetalgia: On Scent, Memory, and the Smells We Do Not Want to Lose: A personal and intellectual exploration of nosetalgia: the powerful, often involuntary experience of scent-triggered memory. The post covers the concept’s three dimensions of collecting, sharing, and connecting, the cultural projects it has inspired, and the 2023 Kunstlicht Journal issue I co-edited dedicated entirely to smell, art, and memory. If you have ever been transported somewhere instantly by a smell, this one is for you.

International Themed Smell Day is July 11!: July 11 is the inaugural International Themed Smell Day, established by themed attraction designer Liam R. Findlay to celebrate the creative and pioneering uses of smell in theme parks, museums, and cultural experiences. The blog post introduces the day, its history, and how to get involved, including the Using Smells in Museums online event on July 25 that I am co-hosting with Liam in collaboration with the Fragrance Alliance Network.

The Future of Smell in Gaming: A Conversation with Sam Wisniewski & Sarah Socia: Digital experiences are becoming our most common interactions with the world, yet they still leave out one of our most powerful senses. In this podcast conversation with Sam Wisniewski and Sarah Socia of OVR Technology, we explored how scent is beginning to transform gaming and virtual reality. From the engineering challenge of making smells disappear as quickly as they appear, to the possibility of digitally native scents designed specifically for virtual worlds, this is a fascinating window into where olfactory technology is heading. Essential listening for anyone interested in the future of sensory media.
